Yes, tarps are out friends. There are a variety of uses for tarps when camping, including using tarps as footprints, floor protectors, covering gear, using one as a vestibule or tying a tarp off for shade, using tarps as floors for a screen tents or even tying tarps off and using them as tents. If your are into sailing, you can turn your day sailboat into a weekender by tying a tarp off, over the boom and across the cockpit (we've done this). They can be used as a rainfly for hammock camping and can be used as a substitute for your tent's rainfly temporarily, if something damages it. They can even be useful for carrying small loads.
